Going above and beyond the competition in privacy protection

American Politics Journal seeks to build users' trust and confidence in our web site and the Internet overall by promoting the use of excellent information and user privacy practices.

Because this web site wants to demonstrate its commitment to your privacy, it has agreed to disclose its information practices, including:

  • What personally identifiable information of yours or third party personal identification is collected from you through this web site

  • The organization collecting the information

  • How the information is use

  • With whom the information may be shared

  • The variety of security procedures that are in place to protect the loss, misuse or alteration of information under our control

  • What choices are available to you regarding collection, use and distribution of the information

  • How you can correct any inaccuracies in the information

If you feel that this company is not abiding by its posted privacy policy, you should first contact us

Information Collection and Us

American Politics Journal is the sole owner of the information collected on this site outside of polling pages, which are controlled by Underwriiters Digital Research.  It is not enough to say that we will not sell, share, or rent this information to others in ways different from what is disclosed in this statement -- in fact, we will work to surpass these weaker standards espoused by some "privacy" organizations.

American Politics Journal collects information from our users at several different points on our website.

Registration
Registration for the full use of this web site is not mandated.

Cookies
A cookie is a piece of data stored on the user's hard drive containing information about the user.  We don't use cookies.  Some of our business partners do use cookies on our site (for example, advertisers) and may even label them as being "www.americanpolitics.com" or "www.apj.us".  However, we have no access to or control over these cookies.

E-Mail
All e-mail received by American Politics Journal (i.e. sent to any "@americanpolitics.com" or "@apj.us" e-mail address), whether or not specifically submitted for publication, may be published in our online and/or e-mail editions, along with the name, e-mail address and other contact information of the sender (not limited to that in the header or content if the e-mail message).  All e-mail received by American Politics Journal may be distributed to our staff and writers. If you do not wish your name and/or e-mail address published, you must specify so at the end of your e-mail message

Log Files
We use IP addresses to analyze trends, locate site errors, and administer the site.  Even though we could use these logs to track user's movement, and gather broad demographic information for aggregate use, we don't.  And remember -- IP addresses in the logs are not linked to personally identifiable information.

Links
This web site may contain links to other sites. Please be aware that Underwriters Digital Research are not responsible for the privacy practices of such other sites.  We encourage our users to be aware when they leave our site and to read the privacy statements of each and every web site that collects personally identifiable information.  This privacy statement applies solely to information collected by this Web site.

Surveys & Contests
From time-to-time our site invites users to participate in surveys or contests.  Participation in these surveys or contests is completely voluntary and the user therefore has a choice whether or not to disclose this information.  Information requested may include contact information (such as name and shipping address), and demographic information (such as zip code, age level).  Contact information will be used to notify the winners and award prizes.  Survey information will be used for purposes of monitoring or improving the use and satisfaction of this site.

Sharing
We DO NOT share user information with our advertisers.  Advertisers, however, may choose to track your movements if you click on their banner ads

We rarely partner with other parties to provide specific services. In those cases, the site user does not sign up directly for these services, therefore no contact information is necessary for the third party to provide these services -- unlike other sites that share data of a personal nature with third parties.

Tell-A-Friend
We do not have any referral service to allow users to inform a friend about our site.  Some privacy "champions" do not seem to have a problem with this stealth information-gathering tactic.  We do.  So we don't do it.  If you like our site and think someone would be interested, go ahead and give that party our URL.

Security
This website takes strict precautions to protect our users' and opinion panel member' information.  When users submit sensitive information via the website, their information is protected both online and off-line.

In 2002 we migrated from a Windows NT server to a high-security LINUX server.

If you have any questions about the security at our website, you can send an email for more details.

Site and Service Updates
Rarely do we send opinion panel members user site and service announcement updates. Email subscribers cannot "un-subscribe" from these very rare service announcements, which will contain important information about our site. We communicate with the user to let them know of enhanced services -- and reserve the right to contact a subscriber concerning issues relating to their email account via email or phone

Choice/Opt-out
Our users do not need the option of 'opt-out' -- that is, prohibition of having their information used for purposes not directly related to our site at the point where we ask for the information -- because we have a higher standard of privacy than most sites.  For example, some other site's order form has an 'opt-out' mechanism so users who buy a product from that site, but don't want any marketing material, can keep their email address off of their lists.  We don't use your data to try to sell you more stuff.

Users who no longer wish to participate in our opinion panels may opt-out of receiving these communications by replying with the word UNSUBSCRIBE in the subject line of the email and no message in the body

If we shared information with outside parties, users of our site would always notified when their information is being collected by any outside parties -- but since we don't do that, you have no need to be concerned in the first place.  Other sites claim do it so their users can make an informed choice as to whether they should proceed with services that require an outside party or not -- but WE won't put you in that position or waste your time.  Period.

Notification of Changes
If we decide to further strengthen our privacy policy, we will post a notice of those changes on this page so our users are always aware of our commitment to staying in the front rank of privacy champions.  If at any point we decide to use personally identifiable information in a manner different from that stated at the time it was collected, we will update this privacy statement and notify our email subscribers by way of email.  Users will have a choice as to whether or not we use their information in this different manner.

We will use information in accordance with the privacy policy under which the information was collected -- currently one of the strongest if not the strongest on the Internet.
