Letter from a Reader
Familiar Tactics Resurface in Anti-Lawrence Jihad
By Anne Bower

Dear Editors,
After spending 17 years as a pro-choice activist, I often feel I have lost my capacity for amazement. Then I read yesterday's account of what has happened to the lady in Texas who called the cops on the Bush daughter.
Ms. Parker's article seemed to attribute the astounding harassment of this woman to those who have hunted President Clinton and his family, but as I read the list of atrocities suggested to torment this lady, I recognized where these terrorists had been schooled: at the knees of the anti-abortion extremists who have done everything in their power over the past 25 years -- including cold-blooded murder -- to put providers of reproductive medicine out of business.
The litany of tactics taken against her, such as putting very personal information about her on web sites, and other suggested tactics, like pouring butyric acid in the nightclub, are classic anti-abortion actions.
My heart goes out to Ms. Lawrence; she will be stalked by the most vicious terrorists in the world. I have little to offer her in the line of help except to hope that if she needs police protection or help in the courts, she will get a fairer hearing than have many in the provider community.
No, I am not a provider, but I did cover this issue from 1990 to 1999 in my former life as editor/publisher of "the Body Politic" magazine, which I founded. If anyone is interested in the war that was waged on the reproductive health care community, and wants to see what kind of horror Ms. Lawrence might be in for, they can read my friend Patricia Baird Windle's new book, "Targets of Hatred." This is a comprehensive history of the terror unleashed by the religious terrorist movement in America--our own little home-grown Taliban.
It's so comforting to know, that even if the abortion issue isn't getting the play it once did, those who fed off it for years can still find work.
Respectfully,
Anne Bower
